This is one of THE most asked questions I get when someone schedules a family session with me. “What do we wear for our family pictures?” So I’m sharing a few tips here so that choosing your clothing for your session is painless and even enjoyable!
Tip 1: Consider where your pictures will be displayed.
Think about the wall, the furniture, the decor and the colors you have in the space where you intend to show off your beautiful family photos. Try to incorporate color schemes that coordinate with what you have already in that room. Your decor will usually be a reflection of your style and personality as well so it’s a great place to start!
Tip 2: What is your family personality?
Are you more laid back and casual? Are you more formal? Maybe a little of both? Your outfits should be a reflection of who you are. If you’re a fun and crazy family, then maybe bright colors and patterns are perfect for you! If you’re a more soft spoken family then think about light or muted tones with simple patterns.
Tip 3: Keep it comfortable.
Wear clothing that you feel and look good in. Don’t wear something you wouldn’t normally wear. If you don’t like how it looks in the mirror, you’re not going to like how it looks in your pictures.
Tip 4: Start with a foundation.
Choose a favorite color and then add accents from there. Choose as many patterns, tones, and textures as you like to add variety. Family’s should coordinate but don’t have to all match exactly.
Tip 5: Layer and accessorize.
Adding a cardigan or blazer will help add texture. Details are always great for family photos. Bows, shoes, blankets for baby, necklaces, earrings. Use things that show your individual personalities.
Lots of stores these days make it easy to find all your coordinating clothing pieces in one place. Old Navy now has matching mommy and me clothing pieces. Gap and JCrew are also fantastic options for finding items that go together well.
